  2.      This interim release of NPA is based on the same data included in the
  3.      primary release of NPA dated 17Sep92.  This version is a PROGRAM
  4.      update only and includes the following new features:
  5.  
  6.           *  Makes more efficient use of internal buffers, greatly
  7.              reducing the chance of a "runtime error 14" from occuring.
  8.           *  Allows you to configure favorite options/switches as default.
  9.           *  Has a black-and-white mode for easier reading on monochrome,
  10.              gas plasma, and LCD displays.
  11.           *  Nag screen appears less often.  This screen reminds you to
  12.              register.  Once registered, the nag screen goes away forever.

  15.           The NPA system consists of the following files:
  16.  
  17.                npa.exe        - The NPA program itself.
  18.                npa.doc        - Documentation for NPA (please, at least
  19.                                 puruse this doc file).
  20.                brand.exe      - Do-it-yourself registration utility.
  21.                brand.doc      - Documentation for brand.
  22.                readme!!.now   - heh heh, you guessed it.
  23.                npa_data.exe   - Self-extracting ZIP file containing
  24.                                 NPA database.
  25.                intl           - Listing of international dialing prefixes.
  26.                summary.npa    - Listing of US and Canadian area codes sorted
  27.                                 by both area code and state/province.

  29.           I recommend that you create a separate subdirectory for the
  30.      database files, change to the new subdirectory, then run the
  31.      'npa_data.exe' from inside that subdirectory.  There are many files
  32.      that comprise the database.  It's not absolutely necessary to contain
  33.      the database in it's own directory, but it sure is a lot neater!

  35.           The environment variable 'npa_data' can be used to instruct NPA
  36.      where to look for the data base no matter what drive or directory is
  37.      current.  ie:  Suppose you elect to place the data in the directory
  38.      C:\NPA, then you'd add the following line to your autoexec.bat file:

  40.           set npa_data=c:\npa
  41.  
  42.           Of course, the NPA executable itself must reside in a directory
  43.      that's on the path in order to be located - but the data can go
  44.      anywhere if you use the 'npa_data' environment variable.  There's
  45.      more detail on this in the documentation file NPA.DOC.
